Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese 2018 prize presentation ceremony held

22.11.2018

The prize presentation ceremony for the Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese 2018 organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department was held today (November 22) at the Hong Kong Central Library (HKCL). Forty-five winning works in different genres were selected from over 1,200 entries in six categories, namely poetry, essays, fiction, literary criticism, children's stories and children's picture stories.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Acting Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Ida Lee, said that the Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese is a platform for literature lovers to showcase their creativity and talents, adding that the Awards can bring impetus to Hong Kong literature while boosting public interest in creative writing and ability to appreciate literature. She encouraged the awardees to continue writing so that Hong Kong literature can be passed on from generation to generation.

A list of the winners (in Chinese only) is available on the HKPL Website. The winning works will be on display at Exhibition Galleries 4 and 5 of the HKCL from tomorrow (November 23) to December 5. The awarded works by the winners, first runners-up and second runners-up in the different categories will be published by the HKPL (in Chinese only) for distribution to tertiary institutes, secondary schools, primary schools and literature organisations. Members of the public can also borrow a copy from public libraries or read the works through the HKPL Multimedia Information System.

The adjudication panel was formed by senior writers, editors and scholars and their comments on the entries will be consolidated into an Adjudication Summary Booklet (in Chinese only), which will be available at the Reference Libraries at the HKCL, City Hall Public Library, Kowloon Public Library, Tsuen Wan Public Library, Sha Tin Public Library, Tuen Mun Public Library and Ping Shan Tin Shui Wai Public Library for public reference.

The Awards for Creative Writing in Chinese was organised in 1979 and has been held biennially since 1992, aiming to promote creative writing in Chinese and arouse public interest in appreciating literature. The Awards is a major event in local literature and has helped nurture budding writers over the years, with some of them becoming significant authors and scholars in Hong Kong.
